Last Thursday I trained in phlebotomy. Quite a feat considering I didn't even know how to tie a tourniquet. Today was the first overwhelming day being on the unit. I had the same feelings today as I did my first day in the lab. Excitement, nervousness, and the feeling of just being "whelmed". I would compare phlebotomy to shooting free throws. When you get a rhythm it's nothing but net all the time, but when you miss, well you miss a lot, that is until you find your rhythm again. Practice makes perfect. (Thanks to by brother for allowing me practice on him) I perfer being in the lab to being on the unit. I don't have the bedside manner or people skills to communicate with subjects. I don't appreciate it when I'm not spoken to and I don't want the subjects to feel that way so I have to remind myself to be cordial and conversational. I feel like a fraud really; not only in "playing my character" but in the feeling of having to know everything. If they only knew how many times I go to Wikipedia, or Google search! (Mom always taught us that if you don't know the answer to go look it up.)
My manager is leaving at the end of this month. I'm happy for her as she has been looking to leave our company for some time. It will certainly be a time of transition for our team. She said that it would do me good to stay where I am for the clinical research experience, so stay I will.
In other news, I am going to see a performance of High School Musical. I've been brushin' up on the lyrics and my mad dance skillz so I can bust a move. I've also been planning a road trip with my brother Doug. I plan on taking a picture of us at every state line we cross. More posts to come soon (hopefully).
